- Sample a cohort of people from a population of interest
- Follow this cohort for many years (often decades)
- Record their attributes and exposures.
- Record who develops outcome of interest (ongoing process).
- This method can be costly, both monetarily and time-wise.
- Compare this method with case-control studies, which are a type of observational study often used in epidemiology.
